Why You Should Avoid Online Bike Fitting Apps Like MyVeloFit

Intro

As technology continues to advance, we are constantly finding ways to make our lives easier and more convenient. One area where this is particularly evident is in the world of cycling, with the rise of online bike fitting apps like MyVeloFit. These apps claim to provide a quick and easy solution for finding the perfect bike fit, all from the comfort of your own home. However, as convenient as they may seem, there are some important reasons why you should think twice before relying on these apps for your bike fit. In this blog post, we will discuss the potential pitfalls of using online bike fitting apps and why it may be best to avoid them altogether.

Understanding the Concept of Bike Fitting

Bike fitting is the process of ensuring that your bike is set up properly to suit your body and riding style. It involves adjusting various components of the bike, such as the saddle height, handlebar position, and pedal alignment, to optimise comfort, efficiency, and performance.

The goal of bike fitting is to create a harmonious connection between the rider and the bike, allowing for a more enjoyable and efficient riding experience. By making adjustments to accommodate individual body measurements, flexibility, and riding goals, a bike fit can help prevent discomfort, pain, and injuries commonly associated with riding.

Understanding the concept of bike fitting is crucial because it highlights the importance of personalised adjustments. Every rider is unique, and a one-size-fits-all approach simply won't suffice. Factors such as body proportions, flexibility, and riding style all play a role in determining the ideal bike fit. Online bike fitting apps may provide a general guide, but they lack the ability to assess individual nuances and tailor the fit accordingly.

Limitations of Online Bike Fitting Applications

Whilst online bike fitting apps like MyVeloFit may promise a convenient solution, it's important to understand their limitations. One of the major drawbacks is the lack of personalisation. These apps typically rely on generic algorithms that provide a basic fit based on a few measurements. However, they fail to take into account individual body proportions, flexibility, and riding style, which are crucial factors in achieving the ideal bike fit. Additionally, online apps cannot assess nuances such as foot alignment or muscle imbalances, which can greatly impact comfort and performance.

Another limitation is the inability to provide real-time feedback. In a professional bike fitting session, a trained fitter can observe your posture, pedalling technique, and any discomfort you may be experiencing. This feedback is crucial in making accurate adjustments to optimise your bike fit. Without this hands-on approach, online apps may lead to a poor fit that can result in discomfort, pain, and even injury. Ultimately, whilst online bike fitting apps may seem convenient, they simply cannot provide the same level of personalised attention and expertise as a professional bike fitting session.

The Myths and Misconceptions About MyVeloFit

There are several myths and misconceptions surrounding online bike fitting apps like MyVeloFit. One common myth is that these apps provide an accurate and reliable bike fit. However, as we discussed earlier, these apps lack the ability to assess individual nuances and tailor the fit accordingly. They rely on generic algorithms that may not take into account your unique body proportions, flexibility, and riding style.

Another misconception is that online bike fitting apps are a cost-effective alternative to professional bike fitting sessions. Whilst these apps may seem cheaper upfront, a poor bike fit can lead to discomfort, pain, and even injuries down the line. Investing in a professional bike fitting session may save you from costly medical bills and potential bike repairs.

It's also important to dispel the belief that online bike fitting apps can provide the same level of expertise as a trained professional. These apps cannot observe your posture, pedalling technique, or any discomfort you may be experiencing. Without this hands-on approach, there is a higher risk of a poor fit that can negatively impact your riding experience.

In summary, it's crucial to be aware of the myths and misconceptions surrounding online bike fitting apps like MyVeloFit. Whilst they may seem convenient and cost-effective, they simply cannot provide the same level of personalised attention and expertise as a professional bike fitting session. To ensure a comfortable and enjoyable riding experience, it is best to avoid relying solely on these apps and instead opt for a professional bike fitting.

Risks and Consequences of a Poor Bike Fit

A poor bike fit can have significant risks and consequences for cyclists. When your bike is not properly adjusted to suit your body and riding style, it can lead to discomfort, pain, and even injury. The wrong saddle height, handlebar position, or pedal alignment can put unnecessary strain on your body, leading to knee pain, backaches, and muscle imbalances. Additionally, a poor fit can negatively impact your performance and efficiency on the bike, making it harder to reach your cycling goals.

Not only can a poor bike fit cause immediate discomfort, but it can also have long-term consequences. Persistent pain and discomfort can discourage you from riding and even lead to chronic injuries. This can significantly impact your overall health and well-being.

Investing in a professional bike fitting session can help mitigate these risks and ensure a comfortable and enjoyable riding experience. A trained fitter will assess your body measurements, flexibility, and riding goals to make personalised adjustments that optimise your bike fit. By addressing any imbalances or issues, a professional bike fit can help prevent injuries and improve your cycling performance.

Avoiding the risks and consequences of a poor bike fit is essential for all cyclists. While online bike fitting apps may seem convenient, they simply cannot provide the same level of personalised attention and expertise as a professional bike fitting session. So, it's best to prioritise your comfort and safety by opting for a professional bike fit rather than relying solely on these apps.

The Value of a Professional Bike Fitting

A professional bike fitting session offers numerous benefits that online bike fitting apps simply cannot replicate. The value of a professional bike fitting lies in the personalised attention and expertise provided by a trained fitter. They take into account your body measurements, flexibility, and riding goals to make specific adjustments that optimise your bike fit.

A trained fitter can assess your posture, pedalling technique, and any discomfort you may be experiencing, providing real-time feedback that is crucial in achieving an accurate and comfortable fit. They can identify nuances such as foot alignment or muscle imbalances that may be overlooked by online apps, helping to prevent injuries and improve your cycling performance.

Investing in a professional bike fitting may initially seem more costly, but it is a worthwhile investment in your comfort and safety. It ensures a bike fit that is tailored to your unique needs, preventing potential discomfort, pain, and injuries. With the guidance and expertise of a professional, you can enjoy a more enjoyable and efficient riding experience, allowing you to fully enjoy the benefits of cycling.

Conclusion: Why You Should Avoid Online Bike Fitting Apps

In a world where convenience is king, it's tempting to rely on online bike fitting apps like MyVeloFit for a quick and easy solution. However, when it comes to finding the perfect bike fit, convenience shouldn't be prioritised over accuracy and personalisation. Online apps simply cannot provide the same level of expertise and attention as a professional bike fitting session. By relying on generic algorithms and lacking the ability to assess individual nuances, these apps may lead to a poor fit that can result in discomfort, pain, and even injury. Investing in a professional bike fitting session may initially seem more costly, but it is a worthwhile investment in your comfort and safety. A trained fitter can provide personalised adjustments, real-time feedback, and expert guidance, ensuring a bike fit that optimises your riding experience. Don't compromise on your comfort and safety, and choose a professional bike fitting over online apps.

I have experience of both professional bike fitters and apps. This is an interesting read but written in broad brush strokes. I have had very good experience with myvelofit. I am an experienced cyclist but can't find a recommended bike fitter within 3 hours of me and none of them have weekend appointments this year! I have used myvelofit to get me into a fit window from which I can then try minor adjustments and see how that feel. I am doing this across 4 different types of bike road race, touring, gravel and TT.

I don't agree with your observation that body proportions are not taken into account. Basic geometry says that if you link points to measure angles,…
